How FIU has shaped me ... ?
Attending such a diverse university has led me down a path where I have had the pleasure of meeting many different individuals with their own culture, story and goals. This has not only taught me the experiences others have gone through in their lives, but also shaped my mind to become the person I want to in make the world a better place
Lastly being born half Venezuelan half Indian but growing up only in Venezuela most of my life has always made feel I don’t belong anywhere. I never got a chance to meet any family I have in India and me and my family always felt in danger in Venezuela, that being said, moving to the states by myself in a whole new environment was definitely a nerve racking and scary experience, but it was a blessing in disguise because I got to meet the real me and who I want to be in the future and what I want to achieve. Being someone who never felt like she fit in anywhere, now feels she has a home here and wants to do everything in her power to make it better Model United NationsI started as a freshman in FIU’s Model United Nations, a collegiate competitive debate and as well as academic team, that has been ranked in the top five in all North America, and was ranked as #1 in North American for 2018/2019 Competition Circuit. I’ve traveled to different cities such as Alabama, Boston and LA, etc., and formed my own committee in FIMUN which is one of the biggest high schooler conferences in the US.
Having taken part in FIU’s Model UN team, has been one of the most rewarding and difficult experiences that I have had at FIU. It has brought so many wonderful friendships, yet at the same time, it forced me to step outside of my comfort zone in more ways than one. Yet every single victory and difficulty is what has helped to get me where I am today. When I came to the Us i didn't know the language or how to express myself correctly in front of people and at the same time with the fear of what people would think of me. With that time I learned that there is not winning or losing but learning. I learned that an honest voice is stronger than a shouting crowd and with skills such as perseverance, discipline, love, hard work, analysis, etc I could take my career to the next level. Alabama Trip “Civil Rights Fellowship” Justice RevivalAs an intern my role was to conducted research and analysis on threats and challenges to human rights in the United States, engaging Justice Revival constituents in advocacy campaigns led by Justice Revival and its partner organizations and coalitions. Also, working in communications, in order to help advance advocacy efforts; including fact sheets, website content, and social media posts and, communicate with donors through multiple channels to provide updates, acknowledgment, and to give our thanks. I have been working on a few projects such as creating content, posts, annual reports, newsletter, adding new constituents to Bloomerang, which is the platform we use to keep track of events, participants, signatures, reporting, and handling social media, including Instagram and Facebook. Also, I will be working with the ERA (Equal rights amendment campaign) soon. Overall, as a current intern, I am making sure everything we do reflects what we stand for: love, faith, peace, justice, and truth. What I have enjoyed the most is working with my manager. I have learned so much about human rights issues in the United States in different ways. I have learned how to communicate effectively, ask for help, and use social media and different platforms to spread the message and gospel. But the most amazing part for me is that I have learned how to stand for my truth in trending topics and make sure I am standing in solidarity with the oppressed and defending human rights for all. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to understand what it is to be in the workforce and how to maximize your potential while loving what you do. First, I have learned that it is about progression and not perfection; I have learned that things take time, and my time is valuable. Second, I have learned that I can do more and beyond what I think I can do because I have the passion, discipline, and love for what I do. Third, I have also learned that it is okay to ask for help and make mistakes because it is the best way to learn. Finally, I have learned that I am good at working on teams and supporting my manager. This internship was a transformative experience, personally and professionally. I realized that every place I go, I leave a legacy, and having the opportunity to inspire my organization and mates warms my heart. I have always wanted to do something bigger than myself, and knowing that what I do is impacting lives is the best feeling. Millennium Fellowship:
